Announcing a new book written by two local Vermont authors! Cast Iron, Cast On: Cooking and Knitting through the Seasons is a collaboration between knitwear designer Becky Herrick and Calley Hastings of Fat Toad Farm with a unique format - the book is arranged as a monthly almanac with seasonally appropriate patterns (by Becky) and recipes (by Calley) for every month of the year.
From the authors: The book Cast Iron, Cast On was inspired by our ties to our local community. Calley and I are both involved with local farms, local markets, and we love the sense of community this brings to our lives. When we agreed to write this book together we were talking about how this sense of community really crosses all other lines. Whether crafting or cooking knowing the source of your supplies and ingredients helps complete the circle. Sometimes Calley goes out of her way to source ingredients that aren't available locally. Other times I stumble across a gorgeous farm-spun yarn at a local store which barely covers the cost of shearing the farmer's sheep. Whatever the inspiration or limiting circumstances to a project I think the key is to be mindful of our actions and our impact on others. I hope this book inspires makers to make do with what is available when possible, to thoughtfully source ingredients when available, and most of all - to reach out and connect with people no matter what our similarities and differences may be.
We will have copies of the book on hand for purchase, and the authors will be here with samples of both knitted garments and maybe a recipe or two! Please join us for this fun event!
